Thank you for re-electing me to serve you in House District 37. While republicans control the House and occupy Terrace Hill, democrats still control the senate. Bipartisan work will be essential in moving forward on a positive agenda for Iowa.
I heard you on the campaign trail tell me you want a seat at the table. I heard your frustration with ever increasing and non-sustainable state spending. I heard your concerns about our increased debt load in Iowa and in the county. This is why the House Republicans started the session with the Taxpayers First Act. The Taxpayers First bill only begins to address the promises we made to votes last fall. We campaigned on not spending more than we take in as a state. The Taxpayers First Act is the first step in getting our fiscal house in order.
In our first bill to be voted out of the House we created a tax relief fund. Tax monies collected above and beyond the need to balance the budget and fill our emergency/rainy day funds should be returned to the taxpayers where they belong. We heard Iowans when they told us they were tired of unsustainable spending.
The Taxpayers First Act also de-appropriates funds for multiple programs with the goal of reigning in government spending and establishing real priorities. Mental Health Reform is also a key component to the bill. I will chair this redesign as it moves through the House this session. I am excited to work to streamline the management and payment delivery structure in Iowa. A bipartisan team will be working toward creating a seamless system for mental health in Iowa, filling in the service gaps we struggle with every day.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you again this session. I look forward to hearing from you!
